Red Feather Lodge
Henry instinctively knows he needs to protect us from the tourists in neighboring hotel rooms plus families packing up their cars and errant children by growling and barking in the direction of our motel room window all night. Thanks, buddy - we love you too!
We decide to hit the Grand Canyon early since the guide books vaguely threaten that you'll be stuck in traffic and congested lines if you (gasp) sleep in and take your time. It actually worked out well as there wasn't many people at the park at 9:00am. We also got lucky as it was a gorgeous, clear and sunny day. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves!
Henry, clearly tired from his nighttime guard dog activities, is not impressed.
Oh hey, weird looking deer!
After walking around for a little bit, we did our patriotic American duty and bought a souvenir at the gift shop. Then it was off to pack up and head to Albuquerque!
Six hours in the car means you learn to love gas stations with kick ass coffee stations, regional fast food (shout out to Sonic and Del Taco!), and anywhere with space to walk your dog that's not covered in broken glass (Love's travel stop - I'm looking at you).
Pretty scenery from the car...
I also have to give some love to the Holiday Inn Express off Eubank in Albuquerque. Pet friendly, big rooms, plus it was conveniently located next to Target! After stocking up on snacks for the next day's drive, we decided just to relax and order takeout. Yelp steered us to Owl Cafe, which was close by and has good diner food. Cheese fries with gravy, nom nom nom. Hey, I never said this was a healthy road trip!
That's about it for Day 3. Next up, driving through northern Texas and on to OKC!
